Roberto Carballes Baena v Henri Laaksonen Head to Head
They played five times before and Laaksonen leads 3-2. Most recent one in Antwerp last year was won by Laaksonen 7-5 6-1.

Roberto Carballes Baena experienced an early exit in Gstaad last week but he’ll get a new chance in Umag. The Spaniard played in a challenger the week prior and reached the final however it left him unable to counter Richard Gasquet who was simply better.
Carballes Baena plays a very physical brand of tennis with a lot of long rallies so he generally needs some time to rest before another match. He’s had plenty for this one and it’s more to his liking. The surface will be a bit slower than Gstaad due to the event being played on sea level.
It’s been a good year for him overall with a 30-25 record. On clay, he’s 29-18 but away from it, he’s been awful. He was always best on clay but generally played okay on other surfaces. Not so much anymore but that’s okay.
Umag is played on clay and it will be to his liking. How he only needs to beat a player he’s had some trouble with in the past.

Poor Year for Laaksonen
Henri Laaksonen is not having a very good year posting a 13-23 record. It’s somewhat a surprise after posting 46 wins last year. He’s not been good on clay either with a 6-10 record and it’s just been a year of inconsistencies.
He was never particularly consistent to begin with but he had some decent moments in the past. The recent form has been rather mixed as well as the last good run happened at a challenger event at the start of July. Since then it’s been two matches and two losses.
Both of these losses were losses in the qualifying stages of Bastad and Gstaad, meaning he hasn’t played in the main draw in a while. Here is his chance however the opponent will be a very tricky one. Laaksonen has beaten him in the past but lost to him twice.
It will be tough but he can certainly do so again.
Carballes Baena v Laaksonen Prediction and Tip
There are a few things to consider here. Recently, Baena has played better, actually much better. The conditions should favour the Spaniard more and he’s the better clay player overall.
He’s also had a far better year than his opponent and considering all of that I’ll back him to get the win.
