Alcaraz Makes a Solid Start
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz made a good start in Umag this year as well, outplaying Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos in the second round on Thursday.
The top seed, who had a first-round bye, needed an hour and 38 minutes to dispatch the lucky loser 6-2, 6-3. The World No. 5 faced seven break points in the match but saved all of them.
Alcaraz had 12 chances to break the opponent, and he capitalised on four of those chances.
The win was the 19-year-old’s 40th win of the season. The Spaniard has featured in five finals in 2022, winning four of them. The only one in which he finished runner-up was in Hamburg last week, when he surprisingly went down to Lorenzo Musetti in three sets.
His four titles came in Rio, Miami, Barcelona and Madrid. Last year, Alcaraz had won his maiden title in Umag, defeating Richard Gasquet in the final.
Can Alcaraz continue his run towards a sixth title?

Bagnis In Second Umag Quarterfinal
World No. 120 Facundo Bagnis had come into the tournament with a 4-12 season record. But the Argentine made a good start in the tournament defeating compatriot Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-5, 6-3 in the opening round.
He carried the winning momentum into the next round on Thursday, ousting France’s Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-1.
The one-hour-and-22-minute contest saw the lefty save 7 of 9 break points. He converted half of the 10 break points that he held to seal the contest and advance to a second quarterfinal in Umag. In his only previous main draw appearance in 2019, he had made it to the last eight.
This is also going to be Bagnis’ second quarterfinal of teh season. Earlier he had made it that far in Santiago.
