Garcia Powers Past Paolini

A day after ending World no. 1 Iga Swiatek’s 18-match unbeaten run on clay, fifth seed Caroline Garcia powered past Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the semifinal on Saturday to reach a second final of the season.

Garcia, who won a grass court title in Bad Homburg in June, improved to 17-3 in her last 20 matches, a series of wins which began in the first round in Bad Homburg.

On Saturday, the Frenchwoman needed just 65 minutes to beat the 10th seed Italian and improve her head-to-head record against Paolini to 3-0.

Garcia broke Paolini twice in each set, while saving the only break point that she faced. She also served six aces and won 80% points on her first serve on her way to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

The World no. 45 began her campaign with straight set wins over Japan’s Misaki Doi and Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first two round respectively. On Friday, she defeated a current no. 1 for the first time in her career, holding off Swiatek 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.

The 28-year-old will be featuring in a 12th WTA final on Sunday. She is an eight-time champion and will be looking to win her third title on clay.

Bogdan Overcomes Baindl to Reach Maiden Final

Ana Bogdan won her fourth consecutive match in straight sets to reach a first-ever WTA final without dropping a set this week.

The Romanian had 14 break point opportunities in the match, while she converted eight of them. In contrast, her opponent had just 11 breaking chances, and she converted six of them.

The two-hour-and-13-minute contest saw Baindl double fault eight times, while Bogdan was far more disciplined not double faulting even once.

The World No. 108 broke the World no. 190 five times in the first set and thrice in the second to register a 7-5, 7-5 victory.

Bogdan’s campaign began with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over seventh seed Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. She kept improving after the impressive start, decimating Katerina Siniakova 6-0, 6-4 in the second round and Brazil’s Laura Pigossi 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinal.

A 14-time ITF winner, which includes six titles on clay, the 29-year-old will be eager to cap off the week with a maiden title.
