On day one of the Australian Open semi-finals, i.e. on Thursday, January 24, the two women’s singles semi-finals and one of the men’s singles semi-finals will be played. The next day, on Friday, January 25, the second men’s singles semi-final will be played.

With Karolina Pliskova stunning Serena Williams in her quarter-final, she will now be a heavy favourite to go all the way. She takes on Naomi Osaka in the semi-final after the Japanese player powered past Elina Svitolina to make it to the last four.

Interestingly, Pliskova has been a former number one but never won a major while Osaka is the current US Open champion and looking to make it to the top spot.

In the other women’s semi-final that will be played on Thursday, Petra Kvitova will be up against Danielle Collins. While this is the first time that Collins has made the semi-finals, this will be Kvitova’s first appearance at a Grand Slam final four since returning from a robbery assault at her home.

Both these women’s singles semi-finals will be followed by the first men’s singles semi-final in which Rafael Nadal will play Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas sent Roger Federer packing in four sets in the fourth round while Nadal is bidding to become the first to win two titles at each of the majors.

On January 25, the second men’s singles semi-final will be played between Novak Djokovic and Lucas Pouille. Djokovic was on court for less than an hour for his quarter-final before Kei Nishikori retired from their encounter while Pouille stunned Milos Raonic.
