J. J. Wolf has a couple of strong weeks behind him however he got a cold showed in Cincinnati. The American was hopeful of a solid run back home but Emil Ruusuvuori made sure it didn’t happen. It wasn’t a very good match from Wolf who has able to stick around for a set but after dropping the first in the tiebreak he simply faded.
That’s something he’ll need to change for this match. Both he and Thiem got wild card entries into this event and it’s a decent chance for both. Wolf has the advantage of actually playing some hard court tennis leading up to this event which Thiem has not.
If he can find the form he displayed in Washington he should be able to take it but even if he doesn’t find that form he’ll still have a decent shot at winning this.
Events like these are important for Wolf as he’s trying to build up as many points as he can for next season where he will have a chance to play more bigger events consistently.

Thiem Begins US Open Prep
Dominic Thiem will only play this event leading up to the US Open and it was a curious decision but probably a smart one. He had some long weeks on clay leading up to these events and he didn’t want to push himself too much. It will be his first return to Flushing Meadows since winning the event in 2020.
It’s been a slow burn for him but he was to find some form on clay and slowly build up some confidence. There are a couple of good for him but he’s expected to struggle once he moves to hard courts. A strong player on the surface it’s simply due to not playing on the surface for a while.
The courts are really fast and he will need time to fully adjust to the pace of play. It will come eventually it’s just unclear how that will impact his US Open chances.
Facing Wolf in round one is a tricky one but it’s a good test for him. He will play many players with a similar playstyle and it should tell him where he is in his prep.
Wolf v Thiem Prediction and Tip
They haven’t played before so it’s a new one for both of them. Wolf looked solid so far in these events but also very beatable. I don’t think Thiem will look that great in this match but he’s certainly capable of winning this match if he plays well.
I think both will have good moments and both will struggle as well. That sounds like a 3-set match to me so I’ll take the over on the games here.
