A day after saving two match points to escape early elimination, former World No. 3 Dominic Thiem stumbled into the third round after his Round of 32 opponent Grigor Dimitrov retired from the contest.
Top seed Dimitrov looked in brilliant touch in the first set, bageling the Austrian. But he looked physically uncomfortable in the second set and eventually retired from the contest, while he was down 2-4.
It was not the way how Thiem would have wanted the match to end, but the World no. 231 has now reached the third round on his return to America for the first time since he won the U.S. Open in 2020.
The 17-time tour-level champion had begun his campaign with a 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) win over fellow wild card J.J. Wolf in the opening round on Monday.
Thiem is now 9-9 in 2022 and on Wednesday will aim to reach a fourth straight quarterfinal. He was a semifinalist in Gstaad and lost in the last eight in Bastad and Kitzbuhel.

Draper Foils Fognini’s Comeback Bid
Canadian Open quarterfinalist Jack Draper made a solid start at the Winston-Salem Open, holding off a comeback effort from Fabio Fognini and advancing to the third round of the tournament.
The 20-year-old Briton, who had a first-round bye, dropped serve on the very first game of the match, but broke the Italian thrice to take the first set. Fognini fought back in the second to draw level, but Draper took charge of the final set and outclassed the veteran Italian 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. In all, Draper converted 6 of 10 break points and saved 10 of 13 that he faced.
Thanks to the win, the British lefty has improved his season record to 12-7. He has been in rich vein of form this year, also reaching the semifinals in Eastbourne and winning four Challenger titles in addition to making his ATP 1000 quarterfinal debut in Montreal.

Both players have been in decent touch recently, but Draper has been more consistent on hard courts and will hold the edge on Wednesday.
