Slow and Steady Garnering of Momentum for Muguruza

Towards the end of the previous year, Muguruza’s coach Sam Sumyk had acknowledged there wasn’t much that the Spaniard could do with respect to her form except to keep plugging away and hope for a turnaround with a little more confidence.

One of the ways a player out of form can build confidence is by winning matches and Muguruza would believe she has arrested part of her slide for sure. As a former Grand Slam winner, she could have done better than to reach just the fourth round of the Australian Open before crashing out but she was up against a player in form, Karolina Pliskova.

The bigger takeaway for Muguruza should have been the fact she managed to get to the round of 16 which included a win over Johanna Konta.

Now, at the Hua Hin Open, Muguruza managed to brush her opening round opponent, Sabine Lisicki in straight sets and will hope to get in this match against another German, Barthel, with as much confidence to do the same.

Barthel Looking for a Turnaround

The German has had a mixed start to the year with a second round exit at the Auckland Open and a first round ouster at the Australian Open at the hands of Anastasija Sevastova. She did win her opener here in Thailand but even in that, Barthel was pushed to three sets by Fiona Ferro, a 101st-ranked player.

A former world number 23, fell out of the top 100 rankings in 2016 and has since then been trying to find her form back. 2017 seemed like a comeback year of sorts for her as she won her first WTA title since 2015, a victory at the Prague Open, but since then the struggles are back on.

In 2018, she had a poor win-loss, losing 21 of the 38 matches she played in, including been 8-10 on hard-court surfaces.

Garbine Muguruza v Mona Barthel Head to Head

These two players had played each other twice, but in 2011 and 2013. And that had ended in a 1-1 scoreline for the pair. It’s tough to extrapolate those results into anything meaningful, nearly six years on and on a surface different from the one they played in those two matches – on clay and on grass.

Garbine Muguruza v Mona Barthel Tips & Predictions

Muguruza to boss this encounter and that can be seen in the odds on offer as  Unibet is offering 2/15 for her win. Instead of that, go for the under/over games in which we think Muguruza should have it quite easy.

Under 19.5 games in the match: 8/11  (bet365)
