Garbine Muguruza bowed out of the Hua Hin Open as Ukrainian teenager Dayana Yastremska registered a straight-set win over her in the quarter-final on Friday.
The Spaniard, who has been going through a form crisis in recent times but had showed signs of improvement at the Australian Open, was ousted 7-6, 6-1 in a match that lasted 100 minutes.
Yastremska had earlier beaten Muguruza in Luxembourg last year but admitted he had decided to forget about that encounter and watched highlights from different matches that her Spaniard opponent played in the lead-up to their quarter-final.
The Ukrainian held two set-points on Muguruza’s serve in the 11th game but the world number 15 came back to force the set into a tie-breaker. After running away to a 6-1 lead in the tie-breaker, Yastremska lost her way a little but on her sixth set-point she finally clinched the lead.
A frustrated Muguruza ended with a smashed racquet and a code violation following this.
The second set finished even worse for the Spaniard as more unforced errors began to creep into her game. She was broken a couple of times on her way to her defeat.
Yastremska will now take on unseeded Polish player Magda Linetta, who sent out Wang Yafan 6-2, 6-3 in another quarter-final.
The other semi-final will be played between Ajla Tomljanović and Tamara Zidansek. Tomljanović, seeded sixth at the Hua Hin Open, was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over the fourth seeded Shuai Zheng. Zidansek defeated Viktorija Golubev in three sets, coming back from being a set down in the match.
Slovenian Zidansek needed as many as six match points to overcome Golubic 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in a match that last two hours and 10 minutes.
