At 124th in the world, the 21-year-old Mandlik is currently at her career-best ranking on the WTA tour after having won her maiden Grand Slam encounter at the US Open.
The American had overcome Tamara Zidansek in her opener there before falling to the eventual finalist Ons Jabeur. And even in that match, Mandlik fought hard enough in the first set to suggest she could go on to become a force to reckon with.
Mandlik has been a part of the part of the ITF tour for a while now, and even this year she has won three of the titles on that tour.
It was finally in San Jose that Mandlik got herself a place in the main draw by winning a couple of qualifiers and then stunned Alison Riske – who is the top seed at the ongoing Chennai Open – in her opener.

Friedsam in a Rare Main Draw Match
It hasn’t been the best last few years for Friedsam, who was once ranked 45th in the world but has now fallen to 213th as she grapples with form issues.
In fact in the whole of 2022, Friedsam has won just five main draw matches on the WTA circuit with some of them coming at the WTA125 level. It needed her to get through the qualifiers here in Slovenia to make it to the main draw.
A silver lining here will be Friedsam’s form in the qualifiers of this tournament where she won back to back matches in straight sets.
More importantly, going into her second qualifier at 2/1 underdog to overcome Harriet Dart, Friedsam clinched a 6-1, 7-6 (7) win.
Coming up against Mandlik, who has shown good form, Friedsam is a distant 9/5 to claim a second round berth but her win over Dart should give her that much more confidence coming into this opener.
