Stan Wawrinka v Marius Copil Head to Head
Before this meeting at the Sofia Open, the two players have met only twice in their careers so far although, it was more than four years ago. Wawrinka presently leads by 2-0 and he last defeated his Romanian adversary in the 2015 Australian Open.
Wawrinka Looking to Build His Form
The former World No. 3 has spent the last couple of years on the sidelines owing to his knee injury. He incurred the injury during the Wimbledon in 2017 which was the start of his massive slump. He eventually dropped out of the 250 and his form took a dire hit.
After spending most of his previous season attempting to get back to gain some traction, Wawrinka finally appears to be fit and ready for the challenge. He hasn’t won a singles title since the Geneva Open two years ago and spent his last year attempting to break that jinx. He eventually concluded the season with a win-loss record of 17-17.
This time around, he started with a quarterfinal run in Qatar, where he lost to eventual champion Roberto Bautista Agut. He then travelled to Melbourne where he lost to Milos Raonic in a four-set thriller. It is worth mentioning that all of those four sets were dragged to tie-breakers.
Copil’s Mundane Start to the Year
Copil, who is currently the World No. 56 – just one place above Wawrinka, started the season with first-round losses in ATP Doha and Qatar. He had a better outcome in the Australian Open, where he made it to the second round before losing to David Goffin.
It is fair to say that Copil is not among the most consistent or strongest players on the ATP Tour. Last year, his win-loss tally was 19-21 and spent a majority of the season trying to get past the early rounds. However, he did have a couple of impressive runs in the Sofia Open and ATP Basel.
In both the cases, he was the runner-up. In Basel, his performance was far more formidable as he started as a qualifier and defeated some big names like Marin Cilic, Taylor Fritz, and Alexander Zverev in the process. He ultimately lost to Roger Federer in the final.
Wawrinka v Copil Predictions & Tips
Wawrinka is going to start this match as the favourite to win and for this, bet365 are offering 4/9.
However, considering Copil’s performance in Basel and Sofia, the Swiss cannot afford to take him lightly. This will be a tight encounter and Wawrinka will be tested by his opponent.
