Tatjana Maria v Kimberly Birrell Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 35 year old German, and her Australian opponent, who is eleven years younger.

Maria Edges Past Canadian

Maria is enjoying something of a late career renaissance in 2022, having won her second title, and her first for four years, in Colombia in April, and then reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon, by far her best ever showing in a Grand Slam, enjoying a run there that saw her beat both Maria Sakkari and Jelena Ostapenko in the process.

It was just a pity for her that there were no ranking points on offer this year. She has struggled to match those achievements since then, and was beaten in the second round in Chennai last week.

But she made a winning start to her campaign in South Korea with a hard fought victory over the Canadian Eugenie Bouchard.

Serve dominated the first set and it needed a tie-break to separate them, the German just edging it.

She then achieved the first break of the match midway through the second set, only for Bouchard to immediately respond with a break of her own.

The Canadian then went a break up but, serving for the second set, she blew the chance and allowed Maria to break back. That meant another tie break, and yet again, Maria was the one to hold her nerve.

Birrell Wins All-Aussie Battle

Birrell is currently ranked outside the top 300, as she continues to make her way back after struggling with a  right elbow injury that has marred her career for several years.

She played her first match in eleven months in Melbourne at the start of the year, and since then, has played mainly on the ITF tour, failing to qualify for a number of senior events.

Spared that rigour in Seoul because of her Special Ranking, she took full advantage by moving into the second round at the expense of fellow Australian Patricia Hon.

The Hon serve was under pressure from the start of the match, and Birrell finally got her reward when she broke it. She had further points to extend her advantage, but also had to save break back points as well, before she could finally claim the first set.

Serve largely took over in the second set until Birrell, serving to stay in it, was broken for the first time in the match, and it went to a decider.

But then Birrell broke once and then again to put her firmly in control of the third set.

She made hard work of closing out then match, though. She failed to convert two match points and allowed Hon to claw back one of the breaks. In the end, though, she had just done enough.

Maria v Birrell Prediction and Tip

Whilst this will undoubtedly be a novelty for Birrell to appear in the second round of a tournament of this stature, she is facing a highly experienced opponent who is in good form this year. It is hard to see any other outcome other than a convincing German win.
