She is the top seed in the tournament but Ostapenko was needed to dig really deep as she carved out a narrow win over wildcard entrant Jeong Bo-young in her opener.
Having start off a 1/100 favourite to claim the points, Ostapenko won a rather topsy-turvy encounter 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (2) in two hours and 14 minutes to enter the second round.
In the very first set Ostapenko was a break down, then was a break up and then went a break down again before breaking her opponent two successive times to take the lead.
She was then broken thrice again in the second set as Bo-young levelled the match. Ostapenko failed to serve out the match at 5-4 in the decider but recorded a comfortable win in the tie-breaker that followed.
The Latvian number one will hope to turn things around in round two.

Gasanova Too Good for Sharma
Astra Sharma was a close 1/1 odds to win her opener against Gasanova but in the end, it was the Russian who came through in two, tough sets to reserve her second round berth.
Having recently stunned Alison Riske in the Chennai Open opener, the 141st-ranked Gasanova carved out a 7-5, 7-5 win over Australia’s Sharma in a match that lasted nearly two hours.
This was after Sharma had a chance to serve out the first set at 5-4 but Gasanova won three games in a row to shut her off. It was the Russian’s turn to miss serving out the second set – and match – at 5-3 but she broke Sharma again as she served to stay in the match at 5-6.
Gasanova will hope she can conjure up something similar against the much higher-ranked Ostapenko but rather unsurprisingly starts off a distant 3/1 to win it.

Ostapenko might have struggled to make it count in the first round but one can expect her to conjure up a win here and in all probabilities in straight sets.
