Ekaterina Alexandrova is back to playing solid tennis after a few lacklustre performances on hard courts in the past few weeks. She didn’t play well at the US Open and she didn’t play well in Portoroz either. Now she has two wins under her belt and a quarterfinal appearance against a player she is expected to beat.
She will try to get to the semi-final and hope to add another trophy to her name after getting one on grass earlier this year. The Russian has a 29-16 score on the year and that’s a solid record but she’s only 9-9 on hard courts. It’s somewhat surprising that she wasn’t able to play better on the surface.
An aggressive player by nature, Alexandrova likes to attack and rarely gives up on playing that way. That should suit her well after getting some confidence-building wins in Korea. She does have a fairly easy draw so the wins aren’t that impressive but it doesn’t matter.
A streak player lives and dies with confidence and she has plenty of it right now.

Surprise Run by Sun
Lulu Sun is playing some of the best tennis she has played on this level. The Swiss youngster is ranked far outside of the top 100 but she is playing really strong tennis at the moment. Four wins this week already and it all started in the qualifiers.
The draw hasn’t been spectacular so she still hasn’t good a signature impressive win but winning three matches without dropping a single set is impressive. Even more so when you consider that she generally doesn’t play at this level.
The element of surprise is on her side and if she can catch Alexandrova underestimating her and play well, she might make things interesting. Beating the Russian will be tough but she clearly discovered something in Seoul this week so doubting her would be a mistake.

The Russian is highly favoured in this one and I think she gets it done. I’m not sure she will win in three sets but I do expect a close match.
