World No. 24 Ekaterina Alexandrova is set to compete in her fourth WTA semifinal in 2022.
The last time she was in such a round was in the 2022 Rosmalen Championships, where she moved on to win the title by beating Aryna Sabalenka in the final. Her other two instances came in the big ticket events in the Madrid Open (as a qualifier) and Charleston Open.
In both these tournaments, Ekaterina dispatched a handful of well-known players like Jelena Ostapenko, Karolina Pliskova, and Amanda Anisimova. At the same time, there have been a lot of instances where she couldn’t quite manage to move past the early rounds.
Here in Seoul, the number two seed started off on a shaky note with a three-set win over Asia Muhammad. Thereafter, she picked up the pace with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Na-Iae Han and then, 7-5, 7-6(8) over Lulu Sun. She is now 30-16.
Admittedly, Alexandrova hasn’t been at her best this week, and as a result, Maria is well placed to carve an upset.

Maria, Hard at Work
Since turning pro in 2006, Tatjana Maria is set to deliver her career-best season this year. She is already 44-24 and looks well on track to surpass her previous-best result of 43-30 in 2017.
What makes this more impressive is that she plays this kind of tennis at age 35. She is the current World No. 80 and the most experienced player in the field.
This week in Seoul, she started with a well-fought win over Eugenie Bouchard, a former top 10 player. Tatjana won that match 7-6(5), 7-6(5), and followed it with an easy, 6-0, 6-3 win over Kimberly Birrell. Then in the quarters, she kept the same rhythm going with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Lin Zhu.
The German started the season outside the top 250 but made it this far because of exceptional perseverance.
Her highlights include an ITF title in the US, a WTA title from the Copa Colsanitas, and the semifinal result in Wimbledon, where she beat the likes of Maria Sakkari, Ostapenko, and Sorana Cirstea.
