Dan Evans v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

This is a very interesting rivalry result. For a player who has never been better than 48th in the world, that Nishioka has defeated Evans all of the five times they have met is a huge shock.

Two of these wins for Nishioka came earlier this year – at Miami and Washington respectively – and both went into a third set.

Evans Coming off San Diego Semifinal

After getting himself a first round bye, Evans made it as far as the semifinal at the San Diego Open with wins over Taro Daniel and Constant Lestienne. And that’s where his win count ended with the American Marcos Giron sending the Brit out in straight sets to make it to the final.

On the one hand, Evans would be pleased to have made the semifinal – just the third time this year – but in the grand scheme of things, his form continues to remain a question-mark.

I mean sure, he has a Montreal Masters semifinal under his belt for the season as well, but other than that there has been no occasion at the highest level that Evans has won three successive matches.

Can he turn things around here?

Nishioka on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Nishioka was a surprise finalist at the Washington Open earlier this season, which was made even more surprising by the kind of opposition he had run over before losing to Nick Kyrgios in the final.

There was a win over Evans too in that run, which included Jenson Brooksby, Alex de Minaur, Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev as his victims. Interestingly, Nishioka did not go into any of those matches as a favourite.

The world number 53, however, has lost four of his following five matches since then including a first round defeat at the Vancouver Challenger.

Can he snap out of those losing ways and get moving against an opponent who has never defeated him before this?

Evans v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

Evans is 1/2 here but with the kind of head to head between them, it is a surprise he is still that much of an odds on favourite. Expect Nishioka to win at least one set.
