Haddad Maia Will Look to Go Deep Again

She started the season as world No. 83, but following a fantastic 2022, she has broken into the top 20 and comes into the tournament as world No. 16.

Beatriz Haddad Maia won her first two WTA titles in Nottingham and Birmingham respectively and then reached her maiden WTA 1000 final at the Canadian Open, finishing runner-up to Simona Halep.

Most recently, she reached back-to-back quarterfinals in Portoroz and Tokyo, but couldn’t make the semifinals in either of the tournaments.

Haddad Maia is 47-20 overall this season, which also includes a WTA 125 title in Saint Malo, and a runner-up finish at the WTA 125 in Paris. She has been brilliant on all surfaces this season and is 20-13 on hard courts.

The 26-year-old Brazilian lefty has made just four first round exits from 22 tournaments this year. She will look to maintain her solid first round record on Monday.

World No. 78 Xinyu Wang registered her fifth win of the tour this week in Tokyo, beating Australia’s Ellen Perez in the first round. She however lost in the second round to Liudmilla Samsonova.

Thanks to that win in the opening round in Tokyo, Wang brings a 5-16 tour level record to Tallinn.

The 20-year-old is 16-21 overall this season and has won an ITF title on clay. That title was her fifth ITF title of her career.

Wang has not won consecutive tour-level matches this season and may struggle to go past the initial round in Estonia.
