For a player who was ranked third in the world just about a couple of months ago, Sakkari’s struggles have been profound. It must have been a while since she went through a 10-match stretch winning just four matches but to do that as a world number three would hurt a lot more.
May be it was the pressure of climbing up the ranking charts, but the fact that all of Sakkari’s defeats in those 10 matches came up against players who had gone into the match at 1/1 or greater odds to overcome the Greek number one.
Her most recent defeat came at the US Open where in the second round, Sakkari was sent packing by Xiyu Wang despite having won the opening set.

Baindl Makes it Through the Qualifiers
Clay has been Baindl’s go-to surface and it is no surprise she has played majority of her matches this season on it too. A semifinalist at the Warsaw Open as a qualifier, Baindl will look to take a leaf off that book here too as she takes on Sakkari after winning a couple of rounds of qualifying.
The 28-year-old has seen better days in her career, having reached 62nd in the world but is now languishing outside the top 120 because of her struggles this season.
A week before this though, Baindl had made it to the quarterfinal of the WTA 125 event in Bucharest, again on clay, and add these two qualifying wins, she has won four of her previous five encounters on the red dirt.
With that kind of practice, she will think she has a chance to overcome Sakkari.

While Sakkari enters this match as a heavy favourite yet again, odds of 1/4 for her win, we are looking at an out of sorts player who hasn’t played on clay for a while. Expect Baindl to make life tough for Sakkari.
