Maria Sakkari v Arantxa Rus Head to Head

Top seed Maria Sakkari rebounded after losing the first set to defeat Ukraine’s Kateryna Baindl in a two hour and 46 minute first round match.
Sakkari missed out on three set points at 5-6 in the first set, before being blown away in the tiebreak. She bounced back in the second set, by breaking the Ukrainian twice and then dominated the third as well to clinch a 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-3 victory.
The world no. 7 has not achieved much on clay this season, with Tuesday’s win improving her to 5-4 on the surface this year. She has been a two-time finalist this year, finishing runner-up in St Petersburg and Indian Wells, but her best on clay was a quarterfinal finish in Rome.
Sakkari had come into the tournament in poor form, having not won consecutive matches in her previous four tournaments.
After enduring a tough start in Parma, she will be hoping to reach a first quarterfinal since Berlin in July, where she fell in the semis.

Rus Makes a Good Start
World no. 114 Arantxa Rus has been very consistent on clay this season, albeit at the lower level tournaments. And she continued to display good form on the surface as she began the Parma Open with a straight sets win over Hungary’s Panna Udvardy.
Rus had a brilliant start, racing to a 5-0 lead, but saw Udvardy fight back to draw level at 5-5. But the Dutchwoman regrouped to take the next two games and seal he first set. Rus was the first to break in the second set as well, but the Hungarian got the break back only to see Rus break again before clinching the match 7-5, 6-3 in two hours.
Rus, who has won two ITF titles this year, both on clay, improved her clay court record to 28-13 this season.
A win on Wednesday, can put Rus in a second tour-level quarterfinal of the season after Rabat.
