Sloane Stephens v Danka Kovinic Head to Head

World no. 50 Sloane Stephens rallied from a set down to oust Poland’s Magdalena Frech in the opening round in Parma.
A semifinalist last year, Stephens didn’t hold a single break point in the first set, while Frech converted one of two to draw first blood. The American dominated the second set, to draw level and then edged past the Pole in the third for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Stephens converted 5 of 7 break points and saved 6 of 10 in the match.
The 29-year-old, who was a quarterfinalist at the French Open this year, improved to 5-5 on clay in 2022. This is the only other clay court tournament where she has won a main draw match this year.
She will be aiming to reach a third quarterfinal of the season on Wednesday. Apart from that last eight finish in Roland Garros, she had earlier won the Guadalajara title for her seventh career title from 10th final.

Kovinic Holds Off Dodin
Danka Kovinic had come into the tournament with a 2-9 record from her last 11 matches. But she will be happy with the start she got in Parma, knocking out France’s Océane Dodin in a three-set first round contest.
The Montenegrin, who reached the third rounds of the Australian and the French Opens this year, started off brightly by taking the first set 6-1. Fortunes turned in the second set with Dodin turning the tables and drawing level.
In the third set, Kovinic had an early break but couldn’t close out the set at 5-3 with Dodin getting the break back, but Kovinic broke back immediately to take the two hour and four minute contest 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
Kovinic was a semifinalist at the WTA 125 in Marbella and the winner of an ITF event in Germany this year. The 27-year-old World no. 78 is 20-18 from all tournaments this year. She will be hoping to reach her first tour-level quarterfinal of the season.
