World no. 15 Beatriz Haddad Maia stalled a comeback bid from China’s Wang Xinyu to reach the second round of the Tallinn Open.
The third seed Brazilian broke the Chinese twice to take the first set, but Wang made a strong comeback in the second to draw level. Both players were solid on serve in the final set, until Haddad Maia got the only break of the set to win the match 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
The lefty, who won her first two WTA title this year in Nottingham and Birmingham and reached her maiden WTA 1000 final in Toronto, had reached the quarterfinals of her last two tournaments.
She will be looking to reach her eighth tour-level quarterfinal of the season on Wednesday.

Noskova Rallies Past Parry
The Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova fought back from a set down to defeat World no. 65 Diane Parry on Monday.
Noskova, who had qualified for the main draw, lost the opening set but fought her way back into the contest for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
The World no. 105 had won both her qualifying rounds in straight sets, defeating Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in the first qualifying round and Heather Watson in the second.
Noskova was a semifinalist in Prague this year and a win Wednesday will put her in a second tour-level quarterfinal.
The 17-year-old improved to 39-12 overall and 10-5 on hard courts. Can she upset the third seed in the second round?
