Nishioka Stuns Ruud
In what turned out to be the biggest shocks of the tournament, Nishioka overcame the world number two Casper Ruud to reach the semifinal.
Nishioka, who was 3/1 to produce that kind of a result, came through 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in nearly two hours to make it to his second semifinal of the season. Earlier he had stunned a whole host of players to enter the Washington Open final.
Enduring 10 aces from Ruud, and saving five of the six break-points he faced, Nishioka also earned nine break-points of his own and broke his star opponent four times. It started with a break in the first game of the opening set and finished with one in the last game of the decider.
With the kind of spark that Nishioka has shown in recent times, it wouldn’t be beyond him to eke out a second title-deciding place for the season.

Kovacevic Gets the Better of McDonald
American player Kovacevic has never been ranked in the top 200 on the ATP tour before this but a semifinal appearance, irrespective of what happens from here will help him break through that milestone.
At the time of writing he has already moved to 166th in the world, after stealing a march on Mackenzie McDonald in the quarterfinal of the Korea Open.
Kovacevic needed three sets and an hour and 41 minutes but in the end, the American sent McDonald packing to carve out a maiden semifinal place in an ATP event. Firing 12 aces and winning 91% of his first serve points, Kovasevic broke his opponent three times from three chances.
And while he lost his own serve once, there was no looking back for him come the final set in which he won 15 out of 15 first serve points while breaking his opponent twice.
Can he now stun Nishioka as well?
