Bautista-Agut had gone into his first round match at the US Open as a 1/4 favourite against American player JJ Wolf but fell to a straight-set loss.
It was a stunning defeat that might have raised questions about the immediate future of a 34-year-old player had it not been for the two titles the Spaniard has already won this season.
