Can Bondar Replicate Clay Form on Hard Courts?
Anna Bondar brings a 35-27 season record to Cluj Napoca.
The Hungarian, who prefers playing on clay than on other surfaces, is 25-12 on clay and 8-12 on hard courts across levels this season.
Ranked no. 61 in the world, Bondar was a semifinalist in Budapest and Rabat and a quarterfinalist in Lyon, Istanbul and Palermo.
She did reach a couple of lower-level semifinals as well, including one at the WTA 125 in Budapest a couple of weeks ago. Bondar most recently played in Parma where she lost in the first round to Mayar Sherif.
The 25-year-old, who had peaked to a career-high ranking of 50 in July, has dropped 11 places since then, but she will be hoping to climb her way back the rankings.

Avanesyan Comes Through Qualifiers
Elina Avanesyan made it to the main draw through the qualifying rounds. The Russian had trounced Romania’s Briana Szabo 6-1, 6-0 in the first qualifying round.
The 20-year-old carried that form into the second qualifier as well, defeating Tamara Korpatsch 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday. Avanesyan converted 6 of 8 break points and saved 4 of 8 during the one-hour-and-45-minute contest.
The World no. 126 is also a clay court specialist and all her 11 finals at the ITF level have been played on the surface, of which the Russian has a 4-7 record.
One of those finals was this year at ITF Cordenons, Italy, where Avanesyan was the runner-up.
The Russian is 3-4 in the main draws on the tour this year, delivering her best in Bogota where she was a quarterfinalist.
Bondar v Avanesyan Prediction and Tip
Both are better players on clay than on hard courts, but Bondar is far more experienced than Avanesyan. Expect the Hungarian to use all her experience in the first round in Cluj-Napoca and advance to round 2.
