Anastasia Potapova v Viktorija Golubic Head to Head

Potapova won their only meeting at the Brisbane qualifier in 2020.

Potapova Ousts Li

World no. 48 Anastasia Potapova ousted America’s Ann Li in the opening round on Tuesday.

The Russian didn’t allow Li to hold serve even once in the first set and broke her four times, while getting broken just twice to take a one-set-to-love lead.

Li put up a great fight in the second set, coming back from a break down four times to take the set into the tiebreak. But in the end, it was Potapova who ran away with the tiebreak to win the one-hour-and-32-minute contest 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

In all, Li could hold just 2 of 10 service games in the match, while Potapova held 4 of 10. So the Russian will need to improve her serve going into the next round.

Potapova won her maiden WTA title in Istanbul and also reached a second final of the season in Prague. She has an overall record of 33-22 and is 15-14 on hard courts.

If she can win in the second round, she will make it to the sixth quarterfinal of the year.

Golubic Battles Past Parry

World no. 81 Viktorija Golubic moved past Diane Parry in a tough first round contest, which lasted two hours and 20 minutes.

The 29-year-old Swiss went up a break twice in the first set, but saw the Frenchwoman come back on both the occasions. However, she broke again a third time to clinch the opening set.

Golubic broke early in the second set as well, but Parry made a strong comeback and broke the Swiss twice to build a 3-5 lead. Golubic got the break back in the next game and then saved two set points on her serve to draw level.

The set eventually needed a tiebreak, which saw Parry save two match points, but Golubic converted a third to win the match 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

Golubic is seeking a fifth quarterfinal spot of the season. While she had a very good run last year, she has been inconsistent this season as a result of which she has seen a dip in the rankings as well. Having started the year at no. 43, she fell out of the top 100 in July, before climbing back the rankings.

After eking out a tough win in the first round, she will be hoping to keep the rhythm going in the next round.

Potapova v Golubic Prediction and Tip

Golubic has not won consecutive main draw matches since reaching the quarterfinals in Warsaw in July. Potapova too hasn’t won consecutive main draw matches since playing in the final in Prague in July.

But Potapova is still in better form as she has been competing in tour-level events regularly and has won the first round in eight consecutive tournaments now. In contrast, Golubic has struggled even in ITF and WTA 125 events since July. So on current form, Potapova definitely holds the edge.
