Wang Cruises Past Cristian
Xiyu Wang eased into the second round with a straightforward 6-3, 6-3 victory over Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian.
Wang, who lost in the first round in Talinn and in the first qualifying round in Ostrava in the previous two tournaments, ended her three-match losing streak in the opening round in Cluj Napoca.
The seventh seed didn’t face a break point in the match, while she converted the only one she held in the first set and 2 of 7 in the second to win in an hour and 22 minutes.
Wang had a very good run just before heading to Tallinn. She was a semifinalist in Washington, after making the main draw as a lucky loser, and a quarterfinalist in Granby. The 21-year-old lefty rounded out the North American swing with a third round finish at the U.S. Open.
At the lower level tournaments, Wang was very successful on clay. She reached her maiden WTA 125 final in Valencia, and also reached three ITF finals, but remains without a title this year.
She will be looking to earn her 40th win (including ITF and qualifying round wins) of the season on Thursday.

Ruse Rallies Past Tan
World no. 104 Elena-Gabriela Ruse rebounded after dropping the first set to see off Harmony Tan in a two-hour-and-36-minute opening round encounter at the Transylvania Open.
The 24-year-old Romanian was edged out in the first set tiebreak, but she tied the contest at one-set apiece after breaking her opponent twice in the second set. Tan, however, started the third set with a break and the Frenchwoman built a 1-3 lead, but Ruse hit back and won five games in a row to take the contest 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3.
This is the ninth time that Ruse is in the second round of a tour-level event this year. She is yet to reach the quarterfinals though.
Seven of those nine first round wins have come on hard courts, where she has a 14-10 record this season.
Overall it has been a very disappointing season for Ruse, particularly after she reached her first two WTA finals last year and picked up her maiden title in Hamburg. This year she reached a career-high ranking of 51 in May, but after a string of disappointing results she has fallen out of the top 100. She will be desperate to climb back up, but needs to be consistent for that.

Wang has competed well at the top level this year and she has produced some very good results on hard courts. She also looked very comfortable in her opening round win. Expect her to prevent Ruse from reaching the season’s first quarterfinal.
