Stan Wawrinka v Benoit Paire Head to Head
The players will be meeting for the 12th time in their careers, with Wawrinka leading the head-to-head 8-3. They have met twice on the indoor hard courts and the record there stands at 1-1.
Wawrinka Continues to Look for Consistent Results Since Injury Return
The ATP 500 gets started at Rotterdam on Monday with a stacked draw that has resulted in some tight opening round matches. Additionally, a handful of former top ten players have only recently returned after long injury lay-offs, and are thus unseeded. This has resulted in a draw where uptp a dozen players could potentially win the title or be out on Day One.
Swiss former world number three Stanislas Wawrinka continues his attempt to regain the form that won him three Grand Slam titles before his knee injury in 2017, which resulted in some time off from the tour. Since his return in 2018, Wawrinka has had some good results, but not managed to get back to the consistency that saw him reach world number three in 2017 and before.
While Wawrinka has put up good results and beaten higher seeded players in recent times, he has also had abysmal early round losses. 2019 has not got off to the best of starts for the Swiss, with a 3-3 record thus far. With a strong serve, relentless fighting spirit and one of the most explosive single handed backhands the tour has ever seen, Wawrinka will be looking for a deep run at Rotterdam,
The Swiss opens his campaign against Frenchman Benoit Paire, who is himself seeking consistency in his performance and results.
Can Paire Regain Confidence and Form for a Deep Run?
Frenchman Benoit Paire is a veteran on the ATP circuit, and has challenged the best of players on his day; the most recent example being his early round match at the US Open against Roger Federer. Although Federer eventually won the match in straight sets, Paire was able to unsettle Federer for good portions of the match.
Paire is 3-5 in his last eight matches and is recovering from recent losses at the Challenger level, as well as a loss to Tomas Berdych last week in Montpellier where he was only able to win two games.
While Paire has the ability to produce some scintillating shots to add to his big serve, his inability to be consistent with his form and temperament in recent times, has been disappointing.
Paire has an attacking game, and will looking to get an early advantage with it against Wawrinka, who can sometimes be a slow starter.
Wawrinka v Paire Predictions & Tips
Paire wil be looking to overcome some disappointing recent losses with a resounding win against the Swiss star. The Frenchman has what it takes to push Wawrinka to the brink. However, in recent times, Paire has not managed to be consistent with his game, and that has resulted in him losing his cool at crucial junctures.
Although Wawrinka’s return from injury has had its share of disappointment, he has shown glimpses of his peak from time to time. Being more experienced, and keeping a calm head typically, should work to the Swiss’s advantage. Expect Wawrinka to move through the difficult draw here, with a straight sets opening round win.
At 4/9 with bet365 , Wawrinka starts as a favourite but we will be looking at a three-setter here, with Unibet offering 13/10 for this one.
