Wang Holds Off Parrizas-Diaz’s Comeback Bid
A day after winning a three-hour-and-24-minute marathon against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, seventh seed Xiyu Wang had a relatively easy day, but still had to put up a strong fight to oust Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the quarterfinal on Friday.
The one-hour-and-34-minute match began with both players exchanging a break, before Wang ran away with the opening set, winning the next five games in a row.
The Spaniard was more dominant in the second set, breaking Wang in the very first game. The Chinese drew level at 2-2, but Parrizas-Diaz broke two more times to build a 2-5 lead.
The World no. 75 couldn’t close out the match, as Wang made a terrific comeback, saving a set point in the 10th game and forcing the tiebreak. It was neck-and-neck affair in the tiebreak as well, but Wang got a vital third minibreak and then closed out the match for a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
The win came a day after she had ousted Ruse 6-1, 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (8-6). She had begun the tournament by beating another Romanian Jaqueline Cristian 6-3, 6-3.
Wang is 41-23 overall this season, finishing runner-up in her maiden WTA 125 final in Valencia and reaching three ITF finals. On the tour she has been in great form recently, reaching the semifinals in Washington, quarterfinals in Granby and the third round at the U.S. Open. This is her second semifinal of the season. Can the 21-year-old lefty reach her maiden tour-level final on Saturday?

Paolini Passes Niemeier Test
Jasmine Paolini reached her third semifinal of the season with a tough straight sets win over Germany’s Jule Niemeier on Friday.
After both players traded two breaks each in the first set, Paolini missed out on a set point at 5-4, but she capitalised on the second opportunity in the final game to break the German for a third time and take a one-set-to-love lead.
The second set saw both put up a solid service display until the Italian got the solitary break in the final game to send the World no. 74 packing with a 7-5, 7-5 victory.
Paolini had started the Transylvania Open with back-to-back wins over two Ukrainians. First, she rallied from a set down to beat Marta Kostyuk 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 and then she cruised past Dayana Yastremska with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
The World no. 78, who won her maiden WTA title in Portoroz last year, is seeking her second tour-level final and her first singles final at any level this year. Last year she had featured in three finals including two at the WTA 125 level.
Wang v Paolini Prediction and Tip
One can expect this to be a close contest between two players who have performed decently by their own standards throughout the year. While Wang’s current form has been brilliant, it is Paolini’s experience, particularly on indoor hard courts, that gives the Italian a slight edge in the semifinal.
