Angelique Kerber v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head
Kerber and Kontaveit have met only twice on the circuit so far. Both of those matches, surprisingly, was won by Kontaveit and the Estonian now holds a 2-0 lead over Kerber.
Their last encounter took place in Stuttgart last year, where Kontaveit won in straight sets.
Kerber Looking for a Perfect Week in Doha
The German, who is now the World No. 6 – courtesy of her fourth-round defeat to Danielle Collins in the Australian Open, will be hoping to go the distance in Doha this week.
She almost achieved this feat back in 2014 but had to settle for the runner-up trophy after losing to Simona Halep in the final.
So far, Kerber has had a rather dull start to the season. Prior to her defeat in Melbourne, she featured in Sydney where she lost in the quarterfinal to Petra Kvitova. Last year, the German No. 1 won the Wimbledon and reached the semifinal in Eastbourne a couple of weeks before. She eventually qualified for the WTA Finals but never made it past the robin round.
It is imperative that Kerber finds her stride in Qatar; otherwise, she stands to lose a lot of ranking points and slip down further in the rankings.
Kontaveit’s Erratic Spell So Far
The 23-year-old Estonian, who is currently World No. 20, hasn’t had the most exciting start to the season. She started off well with reaching the quarterfinal in Brisbane – a tournament where she also defeated Petra Kvitova.
Since then, however, she has failed to move past the early rounds. In Sydney and Melbourne, the best she could do was reach the second round. Nonetheless, in the Fed Cup last weekend, she played for her nation against the Danish team and won her rubber against Karen Barritza.
Kontveit is certainly a player who is capable of defeating Kerber. In many ways, she is like her kryptonite but jokes aside, the Estonian has proven her ability on many occasions. The best proof of this is her run in Wuhan last year, where she was the runner-up.
She was also a semifinalist in the Italian Open, where she defeated Venus Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Caroline Wozniacki.
Kerber v Kontaveit – Who Will Win?
There is no doubt that bookmakers will favour Kerber for this fixture, given her ranking and the recent form. However, the German will head into this match with those two defeats against Kontaveit in the back of her mind. This will be a thrilling encounter and given their previous trysts, this can very well go either way.
You can watch & bet on Angelique Kerber v Anett Kontaveit on Wednesday, February 13, after 8:00 pm local time.
