John Isner v Bernard Tomic Head to Head
The pair have met three times before, with Isner winning on each occasion. Two of those meetings came on hard surfaces like the New York Open whilst their most recent victory came in the Davis Cup on grass in 2016.
Isner, a Hard Court Specialist
Isner, one of the tallest men on tour, is ideally suited to hard courts. He is one of the best and most powerful servers on tour which means that, on a fast surface, his opponents have great difficulty returning his serve, leaving him free to concentrate his efforts on breaking his opponent.
He has won 14 senior ATP titles, ten of them on hard surfaces, and, with the field in New York depleted by the withdrawal of defending champion Kevin Anderson, will feel that he has an excellent chance of adding a 15th this week. If he does so, it will be his first title since the Atlanta Open last July.
Tomic, Better Known for Off-Court Behaviour
Bernard Tomic has become better known in recent years for his behaviour on and off the court and his ill-judged comments to the press and on social media than he has for his exploits with a tennis racquet. The winner of four senior ATP titles, he could have had many more had he applied himself.
However, at times he has declared himself bored with the game, and famously declared to an Australian TV channel that he had built his career on 50% effort.
Most recently he has become embroiled in a bitter personal and public row with his Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt that has done little to enhance his reputation or that of Australian tennis in general.
When he wants to apply himself he can still play to a high standard, and disposed of Lukáš Lacko of Slovakia in the first round in New York easily enough.

Tomic is 30/17 and those wanting to back him will know that on his day, he can beat almost anybody. Unfortunately, those days come round less and less often nowadays.
