Sixth seed Roberto Bautista Agut ended Stan Wawrinka’s run at home with a tough 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory earned over two hours and nine minutes.
The world no. 22, who is looking to reach a fourth final this year, broke Wawrinka in the first game of the match. The Swiss player came back to send the set back on serve but a late second break sealed the opening set for the Spaniard. Both players held firm on their serves in the second set, which was eventually decided in the tiebreak, with Bautista Agut edging past the resurgent former no. 3.
This was third straight set win for Bautista gut but a far challenging one than his first two rounds. The 34-year-old had ousted Laslo Djere 6-4, 6-1 in the opener and Andy Murray 6-3, 6-2 in the second round.
A winner in Doha and Kitzbuhel and a runner-up in Mallorca, Buatista Agut is now a win away from his fourth final this year. He has played in 21 finals over his career, winning 10 of those titles.
He had entered the tournament following back-to-back first round defeats, but he quickly got over those setbacks in Basel. And now having got into a good rhythm, he will be hoping to reach the title clash.

Rune Knocks out Rinderknech
In-form Holger Rune is on the verge of reaching a third consecutive final at the tour-level.
The 19-year-old, who finished runner-up in Sofia and won the title Stockholm in his previous two tournaments this month, moved into the semifinals in Basel with a straight sets win over Arthur Rinderknech on Friday.
The Dane, who wasn’t broken during his straight sets wins over Alex de Minaur and Ugo Humbert in the first two rounds respectively, wasn’t broken by Rinderknech in the quarterfinals either. In fact the Frenchman couldn’t create a single break point in the match. Rune in contrast held three of them, while he missed out on the one in the first set, he converted 2 of 2 in the second set to win the match 7-6 (7-0), 6-2.
It’s been a breakthrough season for the 19-year-old, who improved to 32-23 at the tour level and is 12-1 from his last 13 matches.
Rune, who reached his first ever tour-level final in Munich this year, went on to claim the title in that tournament. He then went down to Marc-Andrea Huesler in the final in Sofia, but beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final in Stockholm last week.

Rine’s been red-hot recently and he is on an eight-match winning streak. Bautista Agut is far more experienced and also in decent touch, but it will be hard for even the world on. 22 to stop the streaking Rune, who is one a career-high ranking of 25. The Dane should keep his streak going on Saturday.
