Rafael Nadal v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

Can Nadal Overcome Recent Struggles?

After an incredible start to the season, injuries have pulled Rafael Nadal down. He has barely played since the U.S. Open, featuring in one doubles match at the Laver Cup and crashing out of his opening match at the Paris Masters last week.

Nadal had started the season by winning three consecutive titles. He won in Melbourne and then clinched his 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, breaking away from Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. He kept the unbeaten streak going in Acapulco, picking up his third consecutive title of the year and then reached a fourth final in a row in Indian Wells, but he struggled with an ankle injury in the final and went down to Taylor Fritz. That defeat brought an end to a brilliant 20-0 start to the season for the former World no. 1.

Nadal however came back to claim his 22nd Grand Slam title at his favourite major — the French Open and then he was charging towards his third Wimbledon title, before an abdominal injury forced him to withdraw before his semifinal match against Nick Kyrgios. He was struggling with the injury during the quarterfinal against Fritz, yet he went on to win the last eight match.

The Spaniard continued to struggle with the abdominal injury for the rest of the season, as a result of which he has played in just three tournaments since Wimbledon. He lost his opening match in Cincinnati, fell in the fourth round of the U.S. Open and then lost in his first match at the Paris Masters.

The world no. 2, who is seeded no. 1 at the ATP Finals, has a 20-16 record in the year-ending tournament. He is yet to win an ATP Finals title, but was runner-up in 2010 and 2013.

He will be eager to win the prestigious title that has eluded him over his glittering career and if he does claim his maiden ATP Finals title this week, he will also finish the season as no. 1 for the sixth time in his career

Fritz to Make His Debut

It has been a terrific season for Taylor Fritz, who will be making his ATP Finals debut following a healthy 43-19 season.

Fritz had a 1-5 record in finals before the start of the season, but he reached three finals this year and won all three of them. One of those was his maiden Masters title in Indian Wells, which he won by beating Rafael Nadal in the final.

The other two titles for the 25-year-old American came at the Eastbourne International and the Japan Open.

Thanks to his consistency, Fritz broke into the top 10 for the first time in his career and peaked to a career-high ranking of no. 8 in October.

Currently ranked no. 9th in the world, Fritz is 2-2 since the title run in Tokyo. He fell in the second rounds in Vienna and Paris after winning his first round matches in both the events.

He will be raring to go in what will be his first appearance in the season finale. With Nadal short of match practice, can Fritz take advantage of that and start with a win?

Nadal v Fritz Prediction and Tip

Injury may have slowed him down at the back end of the season, but Nadal will be expected to hit the ground running in Turin. He is the top seed, eyeing a first ATP Finals title and has a great chance of regaining the no. 1 ranking. So there is lot to play for for the 92-time champion. While Fritz may put up a fight, the Spaniard should start with a win.
