Nadal Out of Semis Race

Rafael Nadal suffered a second straight defeat at the ATP Finals on Tuesday, which ended his chances of progressing to the semifinals.

The Spaniard, who was looking to win his first title in the season-finale, was beaten 6-7 (3-7), 1-6 by Taylor Fritz in the first match and then suffered a 3-6, 4-6 defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second match on Tuesday.

That defeat to Auger-Aliassime not only ended his hopes of advancing but also dashed his hopes of going on top of the rankings once again. As a result, Carlos Alcaraz will end the season as the world no. 1.

Nadal has now lost four matches in a row. The series of losses began in the fourth round of the U.S. Open, when he went down to Frances Tiafoe. He was hampered by an abdominal injury in Flushing Meadows, which kept him out of action for a while. On his return, the Spaniard lost his opening match at the Paris Masters to Tommy Paul, before suffering back-to-back defeats in the season finale.

Against Auger-Aliassime, he had five break point opportunities but he missed out on all of them. In contrast, the World no. 6 had four chances to break the former no. 1 and he capitalised on 50% of those chances.

Nadal will now be playing his final match of the season on Thursday. Can he end the season on a winning note?

Ruud Qualifies For Semifinals

Third seed Casper Ruud became the first player to qualify for the semifinals of this year’s ATP Finals after the Norwegian edged past Taylor Fritz in a three-set thriller on Tuesday.

The victory followed Ruud’s straight sets win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first match. Thanks to the two wins, he is sitting atop the Green Group with a 2-0 record and is guaranteed of a second straight semifinal spot in the season finale.

Last year, on his debut, Ruud went down to Daniil Medvedev in the final four stage. This year, the nine-time tour-level champion has played some extremely good tennis and although he didn’t come into the season finale in best of forms, he has raised his level and is giving his all.

The win over Fritz was also Ruud’s 50th tour level win of the season. He has won three titles this year and finished runner-up in three big tournaments: The French Open, the U.S. Open and the Miami Open. Those are the only three of his 14 finals so far which are not ATP 250 events.

Against Fritz on Tuesday, Ruud won the first set by getting the only break of the set in the second game. Fritz levelled the match at one-set apiece by breaking in the final game. The third set was a real close affair, Ruud missed out on two break points as the set headed to a tiebreak. He the missed out on two match points in the tiebreak before finally converting a third match point to seal a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory in two hours and 11 minutes.

Can he now win a third match in a row and reach the semis with a perfect record?
