Felix Auger-Aliassime v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

Fritz won their only meeting at the ATP Cup earlier this year.

Auger-Aliassime Back to Winning Ways

For 16 straight matches, no one could beat Felix Auger-Aliassime, then suddenly the Canadian dropped two in a row. The first of those defeats came in the semifinal of the Paris Masters against eventual champion Holger Rune and then the next came in the first match of his ATP Finals debut against Casper Ruud.

However, given Auger-Aliassime’s recent form, particularly on indoor courts, it seemed only a matter of time when he returned to winning ways and on Tuesday, he did just that by producing some top-class tennis against one of the best in business: Rafael Nadal.

Auger-Aliassime served 15 aces, won 81% point on the back of his first delivery and saved 5 of 5 break points. He also had four break opportunities in the match and he took two of them to win the one hour and 58 minute contest 6-3, 6-4.

The Canadian, who had lost the opener to Ruud in straight sets is in third place in the Group. Ruud leads with a 2-0 win loss record, while Fritz and Auger-Aliassime both have a 1-1 record. But since Auger-Aliassime’s 2-2 sets record is inferior to Fritz’s 3-2 sets record, he is lying in third position. However, that won’t come into play in the final set of group matches as Ruud has already qualified and Nadal is already knocked out of the group. So the winner of the Auger-Aliassime-Fritz clash will book a spot in the semifinals.

The Canadian, who has won four titles this year, is aiming to reach a fifth consecutive semifinal. It has been a terrific season for the world no. 6 and he will not want the season to end abruptly.

Fritz Losses Edge-of-the-Seat Battle to Ruud

After beginning the tournament with a straight sets win over Rafael Nadal, Taylor Fritz lost a nail-biter against Casper Rruud in the second match on Tuesday. As a result of the defeat he now faces a virtual quarterfinal against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final match with the winner going into the semifinals and the loser going into the offseason.

After losing the first set to the third seed Ruud, Fritz made a valiant comeback bid. He broke the Norwegian in the final game of the second set and then saved two break points in the third to stay on serve. The world no. 9 also saved a couple of match points in the deciding set tiebreak, but he couldn’t save a third one, thus going down 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) in two hours and 12 minutes.

The 25-year-old, who made his top 10 debut this year, had beaten Nadal 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in the first match.

Like Auger-Aliassime, Fritz too is making his debut in the tournament. He has had a fascinating run this year winning three titles, including the Indian Wells Open.

Overall the American has improved to 45-19 this year and will be looking to extend his season by at least another match on Thursday.

Auger-Aliassime v Fritz Prediction and Tip

It’s a virtual quarterfinal between the two debutants. While both players have had a great season, it is Auger-Aliassime whose 26-5 indoor record gives him the edge in this contest. Expect a tight contest, with the Canadian moving into the semifinals.
