Ramanathan Thrills Local Crowd to Qualify
Back in 2018, Ramanathan came within a whisker of winning his first senior ATP title, when he reached the final of the Hall of Fame Championship on the grass of Newport Beach, only to lose to the American Steve Johnson in three sets.
However, he enjoyed doubles success on the main tour last year with regular partner Rohan Bopanna, the pair winning the Adelaide International, and then their home event here in Pune.
Singles-wise, he is more regularly found on the Challenger tour these days, where he has won 17 titles, the most recent of those in Manama, Bahrain in November 2021.
Entering the qualifying competition in Pune, he first came from behind to beat Otto Virtanen of Finland, to earn him a tie with third seed Italian Mattia Bellucci.
With the crowd cheering every point he won, be broke early and consolidated his lead to take the first set.
Bellucci improved in the second set and Ramanathan had to save six set points, before finding the break he needed which enabled him to close out the match.
