Aslan Karatsev v Pedro Martinez Head to Head
59th-ranked Karatsev has not played 62nd-ranked Martinez at any level before this.

Karatsev Digs Deep to Eliminate van Rijthoven
Aslan Karatsev is finding form again. The man who took the ATP Tour by storm in 2021 before running out of fumes and into the wilderness, looks to be back. And how much we have missed this version of the Russian.
Karatsev, lest we forget won an ATP title to kick off the season last year, so do not be surprised if he can recreate a little bit of history for himself in Pune.
He has had a very kind draw by the looks of it, but Karatsev was barely winning these types of duels last year where he dropped outside the world’s Top 50. So far he has beaten Pablo Andujar routinely in his first round and now Tim van Rijthoven.
The former Australian Open semifinalist maintained his momentum in Pune, edging out van Rijthoven in a marathon two-setter that went over two hours. Karatsev was forced to save multiple set points in the first and second set, before prevailing in two tiebreak sets.

Martinez Overcomes Baez
In a match pitting two clay-court specialists, it was Pedro Martinez who emerged victorious in a seesaw second-round match in Pune, winning 3-6 6-1 6-3 in precisely the same amount of time it took Karatsev to defeat van Rijthoven.
The Spaniard bounced back from dropping the first set against Sebastian Baez and played aggressively in the second set where he won a huge chunk of return points and secured two breaks of serve to level the match.
Baez was then beaten by Martinez’s pacey groundstrokes down the stretch as two more breaks in the third set put the final nail in the coffin.
Martinez will need to improve on his second serve which coughed up three double faults and presented 10 break points to Baez. An attacking player in the mold of Karatsev won’t pass up the opportunity to finish off the match in those circumstances.
Karatsev v Martinez Prediction and Tip
It is becoming a norm for Karatsev at this early stage of the season where he hits a purple patch when you least expect it. Judging by how he has been playing this week, Martinez is unlikely to be an obstacle.
