Danka Kovinic v Viktoria Kuzmova Head to Head

Kovinic and Kuzmova have never faced off before in a competitive contest.

Kuzmova Benefits from Raducanu Injury

Emma Raducanu looked to have begun the season on a positive note but that last only a day as she was forced to retire from her second round match against Kuzmova with an ankle injury.

It was a set apiece when Raducanu pulled out of the encounter in tears, leaving Kuzmova to set up her first WTA level quarterfinal since July 2021.

After getting blanked 6-0 in the first set, Kuzmova broke Raducanu in the fifth game and then lost her serve in the 10th as she served to level things out. Raducanu, however, dropped her serve again in the 11th game and this time Kuzmova made no mistake.

At this stage, Raducanu called upon a trainer to tend to her ankle which she seemed to have rolled but couldn’t continue post that.

Kuzmova had gotten to the main draw after registering successive wins in the qualifiers and then shocked Bernarda Pera in the opening round in straight sets.

Kovinic Registers Comeback Win

In a match lasting two hours and 15 minutes, Kovinic needed three sets to overcome Lauren Davis and seal her quarterfinal berth in Auckland.

Kovinic, who lost her serve twice in the first set, saved a further five break-points in the second set before carving out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over her American opponent.

Having defeated Nao Hibino in the first round in straight sets, Kovinic was a distant second favourite going into her second round encounter with the bookmakers offering 7/4 for her victory here. And when she fell a set behind, it looked like the match was going to script.

Instead Kovinic fought back from the brink to seal her first set of back to back wins in a hardcourt tournament since the Indian Wells Open last year.

Kovinic v Kuzmova Prediction and Tip

This is not a contest too many would have expected in the quarterfinals but here we are and it could go either way. On paper, Kovinic holds the edge but Kuzmova will be confident and we could see a keen tussle, especially given Kovinic’s struggles on this surface.
