Alize Cornet v Elisabetta Cocciaretto Head to Head

Alize Cornet and Elisabetta Cocciaretto have not played each other on the WTA Tour. This will be a first career meeting.

Cornet, Former Champion in Hobart

Alize Cornet is one of the most decorated players in the Hobart draw. She won the title in Tasmania’s capital back in 2016, beating Eugenie Bouchard in the final.

And in each of the last two editions, Cornet has lost to the eventual winners of the tournament, namely Sofia Kenin in 2019 (semifinal) and Elena Rybakina in 2020 (Round of 16).

Cornet will make her 7th trip to Hobart, and this time feeling like a complete player. Cornet had an Australian summer to remember last year, reaching her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in her 63rd attempt.

That surreal run included wins over Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep. She will likely miss out on a seeding spot in Melbourne this year, but she remains a feisty competitor who will always give 100% effort in every match.

Cocciaretto Sits Career-High Ranking

Elisabetta Cocciaretto is coming off a career-best year on the WTA and ITF Tours. She won two ITF  titles on clay, and the WTA 125K level title in Tampico, Mexico, during the tailend of last season.

That run in Mexico last October included some stonking wins over established Tour-level campaigners such as Marie Bouzkova and Magda Linette.

Cocciaretto is among Italy’s newest crop of young talent who are making waves on the women’s Tour. The 21-year-old along with compatriot Lucia Bronzetti (who is taking part in the United Cup) are not far off from entering the Top 50 for the first time.

Currently ranked at a career-high No. 64 in the rankings, Cocciaretto started the year with a narrow defeat to Anna Blinkova at the ASB Classic in Auckland. She hasn’t won a main draw match on Australian soil, so this would be quite a splash if she gets her season on track in Hobart.

Cornet v Cocciaretto Prediction and Tip

Cornet played two matches at the United Cup, winning one and losing the other to Donna Vekic. She is still competitive enough to grind out wins against lower-ranked opposition. But Coccciaretto should make things a little more complicated than what the odds suggest.
