Bernarda Pera v Madison Brengle Head to Head

44th-ranked Bernarda Pera will face 57th-ranked Madison Brengle for the first time.

Pera Falls to Shock Loss in Auckland

Bernarda Pera’s stay in Auckland was cut short last week, falling to a surprise defeat to World No. 134 Viktoria Kuzmova in the first round.

Playing a qualifier in your first match of the season can sometimes be a little bit tricky. Kuzmova had already acclimatized to the conditions and court speed from playing two matches over the weekend.

Pera struggled to get into any sort of rhythm, with her serve in particular very fragile. Kuzmova sensed it from the beginning. The American lefty tallied nine double faults and was broken three times from 10 break points she faced.

She won just 67% first-serve points and posted even fewer numbers on her second, at 37%. She needs massive improvement on her Hobart debut with the Australian Open just days away. She is certain of missing out on a seeding spot and Pera will likely play a top-level player in the first round in Melbourne.

Brengle Beaten by Lin

Madison Brengle also had a frustrating opening match at the 2023 Auckland Open, losing a close three-setter to Zhu Lin of China. It was one of the longest matches of this brand-new season, with Brengle and Lin taking it to each other for three hours.

The American had triumphed over Lin in their last outing at the Landisville ITF final in 2019, and after taking the first set 6-4 in 49 minutes, she looked in complete control of proceedings.

But Brengle did not capitalize on that momentum change, instead dropped serve three times in the second set, where neither player settled. Lin was also broken three times. It was a tiebreak that settled matters, Brengle spurning a match point at 6-5 before Lin won three straight points to level.

The two players continued to toil in the third set as fatigue began to creep in, and Brengle who did not win a single point on her second serve in the decider was bundled out.

Pera v Brengle Prediction and Tip

Pera and Brengle will be looking for a response here. The left-handed Pera needs to regain her serve back to stand a chance, otherwise, this could be another error-strewn performance in the making. With that said, I still think she will sort it out.
