Kalinina had shown signs of putting on a good show even in Adelaide last week but had failed to cross the first hurdle when Victoria Azarenka took her down in two tie-breakers.
In the first round here, facing Rebecca Marino, Kalinina wasted not a lot of breaths in finding a way past her opponent. The 40th-ranked player was on court for a mere hour and three minutes before winning 6-2, 6-1.
Faced with just two break-points in the entire match, Kalinina saved both while inflicting five breaks of serves on her opponent in the encounter. Her ability to win points on her second serve, losing just four of them across the two sets, proved to be a huge difference between the two players.
Coming up against Maria, Kalinina will know she has a better game and good form and it could just be a case of holding her nerve here.

Maria Skips Past Gibson
Wimbledon’s surprise semifinalist from last season, Maria was drawn to face Aussie wildcard entrant Talia Gibson in the first round here. Maria was a 1/5 favourite against the 340th-ranked Australian and lived up to those odds with ease.
Maria defeated Gibson 6-3, 6-2 in her opener, needing an hour and 11 minutes to get past her and seal her second round place.
This win comes on the back of a first round loss in Auckland last week where Maria had the misfortune of playing the eventual winner Cori Gauff in the opener. She had managed to put up a bit of a fight in the first set but Gauff came through easily in the second.
The German now faces a stern test against Kalinina, who is 10 years younger than her and that extra energy could prove to be the difference between the two players as the match wears on.
