In an all-American battle for a place in the second round, Pera was able to put it past Madison Brengle in her opener. Pera achieved her first win of the season when she overcame Brengle 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 16 minutes.
In a match that saw eight breaks of serves, it was Pera who always remained in front of her opponent.
The duo shared two breaks of serves in the first two games of the opening set, and then again in the seventh and eighth before Pera got herself a decisive one in the ninth.
Pera ran off to two more breaks of serves in the second set and while she dropped one game on her own serve in the eighth game, she served it out the next time she had a chance.

Siegemund Shocks Martincova
Once ranked 27th in the world, Siegemund entered the new season outside of the top 150. And then featuring in the United Cup, Siegemund played two singles matches, losing both in straight sets.
Now, one might argue those losses were par for the course, coming against the likes of Petra Kvitova and Jessica Pegula.
By the time Siegemund had travelled to Hobart to play in this tournament, her ranking had fallen to 170th and she was up against Tereza Martincova first up. Siegemund started out at 8/5 odds in the encounter.
Siegemund then proceeded to lose the first set, but the fight was on show even then. What followed was a bit of a shock though as Siegemund crashed through the opponent’s defences, 6-1, 6-2.
