Sofia Kenin v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head

Their only previous meeting on the WTA circuit came at the 2022 WTA Angers, a WTA125 competition held late last year. Kalinina had won that in straight sets.

Kalinina Edges Past Maria

Tatjana Maria has shown remarkable grit over the past 12 months or so and her Wimbledon 2022 appearance was no fluke. Which is why, despite going into her second round match as a strong favourite (1/5 odds to win this), Kalinina would have known she was up against it.

And that’s exactly how it went.

Kalinina needed two hours and 35 minutes to come through in a fighting contest, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to seal her quarterfinal berth.

Enduring 10 aces from Maria’s racquet and the loss of her own serve on five different occasions, Kalinina also saved six break-points in the second set. This proved to be crucial as Maria’s game waned from that point onward, allowing her Ukrainian opponent to take charge.

Kalinina had earlier defeated Rebecca Marino in the first round and will now be gunning for her first WTA quarterfinal appearance since Cluj-Napoca last year.

Kenin Crushes Zanevska

After dropping just four games in her first round match against Lin Zhu, a confident Kenin marched into the last eight stage with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Maryna Zanevska in the second.

Kenin, who had looked good on court even in Auckland last week before her hopes were snuffed out by Cori Gauff in the second round, needed just 69 minutes to sent Zanevska out.

Where Kenin got herself an edge over Zanevska in the encounter was with her first serves. For starters she got 84% of them in to her opponent’s 74% but more vitally, she won 71% of those first serves. Zanevska managed to win just 51% of those points.

And while Kenin was broken a couple of times in the encounter, she retaliated with five of her own breaks of serves to clinch the last eight berth.

Can she take this form forward against a player who had beaten her not too long ago though?

Kenin v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be quite a humdinger with both players expected to give it their all in a race to make it to a rare semifinal in recent times. Expecting a three-setter.
