Boulter Off to a Good Start in 2023

Katie Boulter has had a good start to 2023. She won the Canberra International title at the ITF level to kickstart the season. Boulter defeated fellow Briton Jodie Burrage in a come-from-behind three-set final to capture what was her seventh ITF title.

The 26-year-old also featured in the qualifying rounds at the Australian Open, but failed to make the main draw for the fourth time in Melbourne after going down in the second qualifying round to Polina Kudermetova.

Boulter, who peaked to no. 82 in the world in 2019, is looking to break back into the top 100. She had a decent run by her standards in 2022, which also saw her produce her best-ever Grand Slam result when she reached the third round at Wimbledon.

A winner of the ITF title in Grenoble last year, Boulter looked in great touch in the tour-level events on grass. She defeated Alison Riske and Carloline Garcia on her way to quarterfinals in Birmingham and knocked out Terezza Martincova and Karolina Pliskova en route the Round of 16 in Eastbourne.

That win over then-world no. 7 Pliskova was the first top 10 victory of her career and she beat Pliskova again at Wimbledon to get her second top 10 victory.

Boulter comes to Hua Hin in good form and will hope to start well.

Can Jang Overcome Early Struggles?

Facing Boulter is world no. 143 Jang Su-jeong, who too has featured in two tournaments this year, but unlike Boulter is off to a poor start.

Jang lost her opening round match to Burrage at the ITF Canberra International. In her next assignment, Jang defeated Sara Errani in the first qualifying round of the Australian Open but lost in the second qualifying round to Japan’s Yuriko Miyazaki.

Jang is coming off a 32-20 season in 2022. Her best performance came in Bastad, when she won her first WTA 125 title. Jang rallied from a set down to beat Rebeka Masarova in the final of the clay court tournament.

The 27-year-old South Korean also featured in two ITF finals last year, both on clay. She won the title in Canberra but lost in Toronto.

Jang has won a total of 10 ITF titles from 25 finals.

It will be interesting to see if she can overcome her early struggles and get some rhythm in Hua Hin.

Katie Boulter v Jang Su-jeong Prediction and Tip

Boulter is the one in better form right now. So she will be the favourite to win. Also, over the last four years, Jang has mostly been playing on clay courts only, so it will be tough for her on outdoor hard court.
