New Year, Fresh Injury Concerns for Tsurenko

Lesia Tsurenko was on the cusp of breaking the world’s Top 20 four years ago, sitting at No. 23, before her career went downhill.  A lot of that had to do with a dreadful injury record.

Last year alone, Tsurenko either retired or withdrew from six tournaments. She shut down her season at the start of October in order to deal with recurring elbow and shoulder injuries.

And just when it looked like Tsurenko had put her injury nightmares to bed, they resurfaced at the W60 ITF tournament in Canberra in the first week of January.

She withdrew from her semifinal match against Jodie Burrage prompting questions on whether the Ukrainian, now 33, is fit to play in a frantic February.

Having seen her ranking cascade to outside the Top 100, she had to qualify for the Australian Open where she was resoundingly beaten by Karolina Muchova in the first round.

Bonaventure Breaks the Top 100

Last year, Ysaline Bonaventure won 38 matches on the ITF Tour – a personal best for the 28-year-old Belgian whose breakthrough year culminated with a place inside the world’s Top 100 for the first time.

Bonaventure has made huge strides in the opening weeks of the new season, reaching her first WTA semifinal in Auckland from qualifying.

That week in New Zealand, Bonaventure stunned the likes of Caty McNally and former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez and has since climbed to No. 90 in the rankings.

Although the Belgian lefty remains without a win in her last two matches (lost in the first round of the Australian Open to Ekaterina Alexandrova), she should be energized and refreshed for another deep run in Thailand.

Tsurenko v Bonaventure Prediction and Tip

Tsurenko’s appalling fitness record knows no bounds, and she has not disclosed the nature of her recent injury in Canberra. If it is the persistent elbow injury from last year, this could be another difficult afternoon against a peaking Bonaventure.
