Yulia Putintseva v Heather Watson Head to Head

Putintseva, Hoping for a Good Run

Yulia Putintseva, current World No. 47, could have asked for a better start to the 2023 season, but she will have to do with what’s there right now.

Her first tournament was the United Cup, where she lost her group fixtures to heavy hitters like Belinda Bencic and Iga Swaitek.

Next was the Hobart International, where she fell to Anna Blinkova in the quarterfinal after dismissing Claire Liu and Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the preceding matches. The Kazakh next played in the Australian Open, where she was beaten by Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 7-5, after surpassing Sorana Cirstea in the opener.

Putintseva’s previous season was largely uneventful, as she concluded the year at 26-21 (9-11 on hard courts). Her best results include semifinal showings in Istanbul and Budapest and a quarterfinal streak in Toronto.

Watson in a Similar Tide

World No. 140 Heather Watson finds herself navigating a similar wave after a disappointing start to the season.

The 30-year-old Brit first played in ITF Canberra, making it as far as the quarterfinal before bowing out to Katie Boulter in straight sets. Her next stint was the Aus Open, where Aliona Bolsova handed her a 7-6(4), 6-3 defeat in the opening qualifying match. That marked the first time since 2011 that Watson did not compete in the main draw in the Melbourne Slam.

Last season, her noticeable results were the runner-up feat in ITF Glasgow and a fourth-round showing at Wimbledon. All in all, she ended the season 29-26.

Heather has spent the better part of the last few seasons in mediocrity with little to show for it.

Putintseva v Watson Prediction and Tip

This match is Putintseva’s to lose. Even though the Kazakh is not in the best form, she has been far more consistent through the seasons – evident from her steady grip in the top 50. She has superior experience and should do well to move past Watson easily.
