Anna Kalinskaya v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between Kalinskaya and Tsurenko before this.

Kalinskaya Blows Makarova Apart

In a match that lasted a mere 47 minutes – one of the shortest women’s matches at the highest level this year – Kalinskaya romped to a 6-1, 6-1 win over fellow countrywoman Ekaterina Makarova in the first round.

Kalinskaya, who had gone into the encounter as a 1/17 favourite, lived up to that billing but what was interesting to note was both the games she lost in the match were off her own serve.

What that also implies is that she broke Makaraova every single time, winning 28 of the 35 points on her opponent’s serve.

She had come into this match on the back of a first round exit at the Australian Open but not before Kalinskaya had given a fair fight to the previous year’s runner-up Danielle Collins. As a qualifier, Kalinskaya had also made the second round in Adelaide, making this win over Makarova her second of the season.

Can Kalinskaya now get past Tsurenko as she bids to break into the top 50 of the WTA Rankings for the first time in her career?

Tsurenko Wins Maiden Match of 2023

Ysaline Bonaventure wasn’t quite the favourite going into her opening round match but she sure did give Tsurenko a run for her money. Tsurenko, who had come into this tournament without a WTA main draw win to her name in 2023, came through in a hard-fought encounter in the end though.

The former world number 23 carved out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win to move to round two but it needed her two hours and 16 minutes to get through.

In a match where both players struggled on their serve, Tsurenko and Bonaventure won 55% and 50% of the points on their own serves. This led to a whopping 12 breaks of serves in the match, including a bizarre final set.

Tsurenko broke Bonaventure twice in the third set to go 5-0 up but then missed two match-points and was broken back twice. Serving to stay in the match at 4-5, Bonaventure then lost her own serve and fell to a defeat.

Can Tsurenko get her serve in order against the solid-looking Kalinskaya?

Kalinskaya v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

Kalinskaya is a favourite here given her overall form and pedigree. Tsurenko can be expected to hang on but not for long we believe.
