And fresh from the confidence-boosting tournament victory last week, Maria had no difficulties in getting past Alexandra Eala, a player less than half her own age – in her opener here.
Maria won 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 11 minutes to make it through to the second round where she will face a more difficult challenge in the form of the former world number 21. Can she take this rhythm forward?

Yastremska Finally Scrapes Through to a Win
She was once ranked 21st in the world but form has deserted Yastremska in recent times. That has been on show this season too as the Ukrainian player lost in the qualifier at the Adelaide International and then fell to Jelena Ostapenko in an Australian Open first round encounter.
Which is why, going up against the 116th-ranked Uchijima Moyuka, Yastremska might have been a favourite but at the same time wasn’t quite one by some distance.
That’s how the match turned out too. In the end, it was Yastremska’s experience that saw her through but she needed three sets and two hours, 39 minutes to make it to the second round.
Yastremska registered her first win of the season, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2 to seal her second round berth – a rare one at that since her quarterfinal appearance at the Birmingham Open in June last year.
An in-form Maria could prove to be a handful.
