Marta Kostyuk v Nao Hibino Head to Head

Their only previous main draw meeting at the highest level came at the 2020 French Open where Hibino defeated Kostyuk in straight sets to make the second round. They met again in the qualifiers of the WTA Rome in 2021, where Kostyuk came through 7-5, 6-3.

Interesting to note, both these matches came on clay.

En Shou Liang is ranked 364th in the world and started off her match against Kostyuk as a whopping 13/2 underdog. Which is why, when 57 minutes into the contest, Kostyuk had lost the first set, it was already a big surprise. More so because Kostyuk had a couple of set-points in the tie-breaker.

It was in the second and third sets that followed that Kostyuk turned things around, coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the next 11 games in a row and the match in the process.

This win comes on the back of a third round appearance at the Australian Open where Kostyuk had stunned Amanda Anisimova before losing to Jessica Pegula. Earlier this year, Kostyuk had also overcome Elena Rybakina in Adelaide on her way to the quarterfinals.

As far as confidence goes, Kostyuk should have oodles of it coming into this encounter against a player who is currently 139th in the world.

Hibino Finally Wins a Main Draw Match

The last time Hibino had won a main draw match on the WTA circuit was way back in September last season when she reached the quarterfinals of the Chennai Open. Four months on, she overcame the 230th-ranked Valeria Savinykh to add to that count.

The Japanese player, who was once in the top 60 on the WTA charts but has fallen away to outside the top 130, wasted no time in sending Savinykh packing.

Having fallen in the first round at the Auckland Open earlier this year and failed to qualify for the Australian Open, Hibino would be rather chuffed with her 6-0, 6-2 victory which came in an hour and nine minutes.

Hibino faced three break-points in the match and saved each one of them while getting past Savinykh’s serve on five occasions from the 13 times she got a chance.

Can she now pack a similar punch against Kostyuk?

Kostyuk v Hibino Prediction and Tip

This has Kostyuk starting out a 2/7 favourite but we think the meeting could go a lot closer than that with not much separating the two.
