Wang Makes it Successive Straight-Set Wins

A quarterfinalist at the Hobart International having entered the tournament in the qualifying rounds, Wang has now repeated the act here with back to back straight-set wins.

The Chinese player outgunned Mirjam Bjorklund in the second round, winning 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinal with the match lasting an hour and 26 minutes.

The seventh seeded player grabbed a break of serve early in the first set and drilled home the advantage in the ninth game with a second break to take the lead. In the second set, Wang dropped her serve in the very first game but once she had levelled things out in the fourth game there was no looking back.

She faced one further break-point which she saved before breaking Bjorklund and then serving it out to win the match.

This follows a straight-set win over Joanne Zuger in her opener.

Watson Scrapes Past Han

It wasn’t the prettiest performance from Watson and it took her two hours and 36 minutes to make it through but in the end, the Brit will be pleased to have made it to a rare WTA quarterfinal.

Having fallen to 160th in the world, Watson won 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 against Na-Lae Han in a match that saw 26 break-points and 13 breaks of serves. It was Watson’s second break in a slightly more clinical third set that helped her through to the victory.

This win followed Watson’s opening three-set win against Yulia Putintseva which had gone the distance and saw the Brit clinch her first main draw victory of the season.

The last time Watson won successive matches was in June 2022 and she had gone ahead to win three in a row. Can she do it again this time?

Wang v Watson Prediction and Tip

Wang is 2/5 to win this and it does seem like Watson’s run could be ended by her in-form Chinese opponent. Straight-set win expected for Wang.
