Paula Badosa v Liudmilla Samsonova Head to Head

At the highest level these two players have faced off once. It was a match at the 2021 Australian Open and Samsonova had won it in three gruelling sets. There was one other meeting on the ITF circuit as well which Samsonova had won in 2018.

Samsonova Makes Slow Start to the Season

Samsonova has won two of the five matches she’s played this season, including a victory over top-25 player Shuai Zhang to kick-start the year.

Unfortunately for her, through a combination of a difficult draw and underwhelming play, Samsonova hasn’t quite going. She lost in the second round of the Adelaide International to Aryna Sabalenka – but then who isn’t losing to her these days! – and then fell in her opener at Adelaide 2 to Amanda Anisimova.

The world number 19 went into the Australian Open with a lot of hope though. And when she knocked Jasmine Paolini out with ease, one would have expected her to do a lot better than what eventually happened.

In the second round at the season’s first major, Samsonova was sent packing by Donna Vekic 6-3, 6-0.

Can Samsonova turn things around now?

Badosa Returns from Fitness Concerns

Badosa was ranked second in the world last year and looked to have made a strong start to the season in a bid to recapture some of that form after falling out of the top 10 on the WTA charts.

The Spaniard won her only United Cup singles match to kick-start the year before overcoming three of the trickiest opponents she could have faced in Adelaide the following week. Victories over Anett Kontaveit, Kaia Kanepi and Beatriz Haddad Maia took her to the semifinal there.

Just prior to the start of that last four match against Daria Kasatkina though, Badosa had pulled out because of right thigh injury but at the point it looked more of a precautionary move rather than a serious injury.

The latter was only confirmed when Badosa also opted out of the Australian Open because of the same injury. She did not feature in any of the two WTA tournaments last week either before returning this week.

And like was the case in Adelaide Badosa has been drawn to play the world number 19 in round one here. Can she shrug her fitness woes off?

Badosa v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Before she got injured, Badosa had shown remarkable composure in Adelaide to make the semifinals and that quality of play should make her a favourite. Now that she is returning from her fitness woes though, Badosa could find the going tough and starts off a second favourite here. We will have to adopt a wait and watch policy here.
