Bagnis, A former semifinalist in Cordoba

Facundo Bagnis begins the South American Golden Swing on home soil. But things haven’t always gone to plan in the first week of February apart from his run to the semifinal back in 2021.

In three of the last four editions of the Cordoba Open, Bagnis has lost in the first round, and it is the kind of record he will be looking to improve on this week when he opens up against Marco Cecchinato.

For the second year in a row, Bagnis ended the season with a Top 100 ranking, thanks in part to his good form on the Challenger Tour which yielded titles in Ambato and Pereira.

The Argentine lefy hasn’t won a main draw match this year. He lost in qualifying in Auckland to Jiri Lehecka and was beaten in four sets by Dan Evans in the first round of the Australian Open.

Cecchinato Always A Threat on Clay

Marco Cecchinato is one of the most consistent performers on clay. At his pomp, he broke the ATP’s top 20 simply by outplaying his opponents on one surface.

He is a former Roland Garros semifinalist and has a win over Novak Djokovic at the event. The Italian, however, spent a few years in the wilderness following his shock French Open run in 2018.

Cecchinato was ranked as low as No. 206 in June 2022, failing to win a single match in the first four months of the season. But the Italian was a vibrant beast in the second half of the campaign, winning 34 matches on the Challenger Tour.

The 30-year-old one-hander scooped titles in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro, and sat on the cusp of a Top 100 spot (at No. 101) in December. By virtue of some players dropping points in the opening weeks of 2023, Cecchinato has since re-entered the top 100.

Bagnis v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip

Bagnis has always struggled at this tournament bar his semifinal run here in 2021. Cecchinato was almost unplayable in the second half of last season winning a shedload of matches. If the Italian’s game is firing on all cylinders, he will upset the home favorite.
